because of depression or a lack of motivation or something similar that old-school athletes would scoff at as a lack of toughness. Modern thinking is to take things like that more seriously, but it still doesn't fit the narrative of athletic competition at the highest level (i.e. perseverance and overcoming adversity) very well.

Sounds more like she was in genuine fear of seriously hurting herself if she continued.

This isn't "my dog is sick and I'm not sure I can continue." This reminds me more of a QB with a concussion...sure, he could continue, but he is more likely to both hurt himself and the team if he did.
